Instead of requiring a 34 week commitment, the new format offers several 8 to 10 week studies. While the lengthy time commitment has been removed, the publishers have kept much of what makes Disciple Bible Study so special: presenting the Bible as the primary text, daily preparation for each participant, weekly group meetings, video segments featuring a variety of biblical scholars, and the goal of increased discipleship on the part of each participant. Starting sometime in October I will be offering the 8 week study "Invitation to the New Testament." An exact starting date and meeting time have not yet been decided. Those details will be worked out once I know who is interested in participating. It may be that we will have both daytime and a nighttime sessions. I am quite willing to be very flexible in getting this group started. Attached is a sign up sheet. If you are interested in participating in this new exciting study, please fill it out and send it to/drop it off in the church office. I look forward to our work together in this new form of Bible Study. Peace, Pastor Alice Ann |

Rather than providing dinners they will be giving vouchers from a local supermarket that will offer each family the money to purchase their own dinner. The cards will be limited to purchases of food so they can be assured they will be used for holiday dinners. Loaves and Fishes hope their supporters will be generous in their support of their Holiday Food Fund. | Added 8/30/2004 - from the September Newsletter Prayer Partners - Prayer Partners comes from the belief that as a church of Lord Jesus, the most fundamental thing that we should be doing is praying. Over the last few years it has evolved into a two part-ministry. The first ministry is a Prayer Partners e-mail that is sent weekly with requests that the Prayer Partners then pray for during the week. These are prayer requests that were mentioned during the church service and any other requests that have come our way. The second ministry is a time of prayer in the parlor (or the library if it is really hot) every Thursday evening at 6:45PM. We use this time to pray for friends, family, church members, community, country and world. We are committed to having the session over by 7:30 and pray following the Lord's Prayer format. The Lord has blessed us richly during this time. We always feel His presence. Please join us if you feel so led. You will be most welcome. -- Marj B. Disciple I Bible Study - To Start This Fall on Wednesday nights @ 7 PM beginning September 15. Disciple: becoming disciples through Bible Study is an approach to Bible Study that emphasizes the disciplined reading of and listening to Scripture. It results in biblically nourished persons committed to living as disciples of Jesus Christ. During the course of 34 weeks, the group of 10-18 persons will move through the scriptures from Genesis to Revelations. Disciple Bible Study participants make a committment of daily reading and reflection (30-36 minutes per day) which will cover more than 70 percent of the Bible. Participants will also commit to weekly group session, 2-2.5 hours long. Sessions will include insightful videos of biblical scholars, teachers and preachers on material discussed that session. Disciple aims at transformation, not just information. Disciple calls on persons to submit themselves to examination by Holy Scripture, to put themselves under the power of God's work and living Spirit, and to be changed by God's word. Consider the opportunity to read and study the Bible in a small committed group and be challenged in your growth as a Christian. If you are interested please write your name, address, home and work phone numbers on a piece of paper and send or drop it off to the church office with "Disciple I Registration" on it. He is a publisher, traveled to Germany and Spain, appeared on CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN and NPR and the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Boston Herald and the Christian Science Monitor have all printed his accomplishments. Missions Notes Many, Many thanks to everyone for their support over the past several years to the Mission Committee. Especially the food cupboard, turkeys at Christmas and the Thanksgiving and serving at City Team. In the year 2002 we sent 241 baby hats to CCMC and Methodist Hospital Nurseries. (Methodist Hospital closed their maternity dept. earlier in the year so now they all go to CCMC.) 29 sweaters were sent to Guidepost Sweater Project, so keep up the good work. Because of the Acme receipts and the Mission envelopes we were able to donate money to many worthy projects. Thank you, Allene G. Missions Notes Greetings: As Mission's Chair, I'll be collecting ACME receipts, give them to me directly or leave in my mailbox. Since this committee is a small one, but very hardworking, I ask you to prayerfully consider being on the Missions Team as it is like no other. Jesus told us to feed, clothe, and give drink to the thirsty (a pretty powerful message when you think about it.) But a message that just may change your life and hopefully the lives of many others. Thank you, Karen P. |

Is there anyone who would like to make hats for CCMC Nursery or sweaters for Guideposts Magazine? Please let me know if you need yarn. Thanks for all the Acme receipts. Keep us the good work. Thanks for everyone's support. -- Allene G., Chairperson Mission Report Many thanks to those who served at City Team on October 30th. There were 65 people served plus the men who live there. Pastor Alice Ann conducted the church service and Bob M. was soloist. Serving dinner were Phyllis M. and Ed and Allene G. Please get a free turkey for our Thanksgiving food baskets and for City Team. We already have requests for food and Christmas toys. Christmas Gifts for Needy Children Christmas is a time to rejoice and remember the special gift that our Lord has given us, in his son, Jesus Christ. One way for us to remember and celebrate that gift is by giving to others in the Christmas Season. Again this year a tree will be located in the Narthex with ornaments/tags for children in my Early Childhood/Head Start Program. My program is located in Southwest Philly, and the neighborhood is surrounded by city blight. The agency I work for is a non-profit organization and holiday gifts just are not in the budget. In some cases the children in my program have delopmental delays, and many of the families are living at or below the poverty line. In addition, because my center is located in the inner-city, crime and violence are a daily reality. The gifts that the children receive often will be the only gift they receive in this giving season. Please help my center put smiles on the faces of these smallest of God's wonders, by purchasing a gift for a boy or girl in our program. The Gift Tree will be set up by Sunday November 24th. The gift tags will list the children's name, age, race and a few gift ideas. The gift should have a value of $12-$15. There is not a need to wrap the gift, simply attach the peel & stick label to the gift and place it under the tree by Sunday, December 15th. In advance I would like to thank you for your support of this very special mission. In Christ -- Linda L. Christian Education News The year is quickly flying by, and Christmas will be here before we know it. I am happy to report that we have two teachers for each Sunday School Class. The Sunday School Teachers have begun to plan for the Children's Christmas Eve Service. This year the service will again be at 7:00. Ellie Q. has written a pageant for this year's service. Reverend Alice Ann has been working with Ellie very closely to fine tune the script and the children are looking forward to another year's festivities. Please come out to see this year's pageant as the children tell the story as if it is being told from heaven. In an effort to begin to plan for the rest of the year, our committee will be planning some "e;old favorite" events. One such event will be an Easter Egg Hunt and visit to Ross Manor by the children. Another event is the ever-reappearing Vacation Bible School. This year I will not be able to take the leadership role for the week of VBS, but will be able to provide guidance and support in the planning. Please be in prayer for someone to come forward that would be willing to take on the challenge of directing/running VBS. If anyone is interested in contributing to the planning for Christmas, and Easter events, please see one of the Sunday School Teachers or myself for more details. Respectfully Submitted -- Linda L. | Added 09/30/2002 - from the October Newsletter *Upcoming Fundraisers I know no one wants to think about it, but we are fast approaching the holiday season. We will again start our season off with a Craft Fair on October 19th. Lunch will be available. Anyone wishing to help cut the costs can donate items for our lunch sale. Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated. Following the Craft Sale we will be holding our Second Cookie Sale - just in time for Christmas and those parties you may need to go to. I am again asking for volunteers to bake cookies. If you baked last year, the sale was a great success. We received many compliments on our cookies - they were all great! Sign up for cookies as well as craft luncheon donations are on the board across from the office. Hoping to have you working along with us in our endeavors to help raise extra funds for our church. - Debbie B. *Christian Education News Sunday School began again on September 8th, with four classes for children. An Adult Sunday School class will begin near the end of September. If you would like input into topics to be covered, please see Donna F. The following is a list of teachers for our Sunday School classes: Preschool - Linda T./Sheila D., Kindergarten thru 2nd Grade - Debbie F., 3rd Grade thru 5th Grade - Laurie P./Alicia S., Middle School & High School - Ellie Q./Linda L., Adult Education - Donna F. This year the Sunday School will be using Hands On Curriculum. This Curriculum provides the children with active learning activities to experience and embrace God's Amazing Love. Each week the children learn about a specific passage in the bible using a "prop" and game. The children have opportunities to learn using their own learning style. Children often can tell you from one week to the next what the previous week's message was about. They also receive follow-up activities that they can do with their families at home. In preparation for Harvest Home Sunday, we will be asking the children to bring in can goods or items for the food closet. Each week a different class will collect the items. On Harvest Home Sunday the children will have an opportunity to participate in the service by bringing the items collected to the altar. Please be in prayer this year that our Sunday School attendance will multiply and our children will grow in the knowledge that God knows us and loves us all. - In Christian Love, Linda L. | Added 08/04/2002 DISCIPLE Bible Study to Begin this Fall DISCIPLE: becoming disciples through Bible study is an approach to Bible Study that emphasizes disciplined reading of and listening to Scripture. It results in biblically nourished persons committed to living as disciples of Jesus Christ. During the course of 34 weeks, the group of 10-15 persons will move through the scriptures from Genesis to Revelations. DISCIPLE Bible Study participants make a commitment of daily reading and reflection (30-45 minutes per day) which will cover more than 70 percent of the Bible. Participants will also commit to weekly group sessions, 2 - 2 1/2 hours long. Sessions will include insightful videos of biblical scholars, teachers and preachers on material discussed that session. DISCIPLE aims at transformation, not just information. DISCIPLE calls on persons to submit themselves to examination by Holy Scripture, to put themselves under the power of God's word and living Spirit, and to be changed by God's word. Consider the opportunity to read and sty the Bible in a small committed group and be challenged in your growth as a Christian. If you are interested please fill out the form on the reverse side and leave in the offering plate or in the church office (contact the church office). Session day(s) and time(s) will be determined by interest and availability of respondents and leader. CITY TEAM IS IN GREAT NEED OF USED (OR NEW) high chairs, cribs & mattresses. We have seen a great increase in the number of sweaters since September 11 and I am grateful because the demand has also grown. We are currently partnering with the agency, Heart to Heart, to get sweaters to Afghanistan as so many of you have requested. That's no easy task. We've also been able to continue to fill needs in this country. The Unites Sioux tribes of South Dakota recently received more than 250 sweaters. Thank you all. The need is great and so are you! signed Brigitee Weeks, Editor-in-Chief Book & Inspirational Media Division MEDICAL TEAM FROM EASTERN PA WILL SERVE AT UM CLINIC IN NIGERIA: A team of Medical professionals will travel to a United Methodist Clinic in Zing, Nigeria in July. It's not possible without your help! CHRISTIAN EDUCATION NEWS: The year is flying by so quickly, and soon the school year will be ending, signaling the end of Sunday School. The last week of Sunday School will be June 2nd. In celebration of the end of another school year, the Sunday School and Youth Group will join in an end of year get-together at Putt-Putt. The children are invited to meet at the church by 5:00PM, where they will be carpooled to Putt Putt. The children are expected back by 8:00PM. Another event that we are preparing for will by the annual week of Vacation Bible School. This year our curriculum, is provided by Group and the title is Bug Safari. The children will catch the buzz about God's love in fun and exciting ways. Each day the lessons are focused on a particular bible verse, and the children will receive a little bug with the bible verse on it to help them remember the buzz about God all year long. Vacation Bible School is set for the Week of July 8th through July 12th, and will begin at 6:15PM and end by 8:45PM. So mark your calendars and get set to Catch the Buzz about God and his amazing Love. Finally, please be in prayer for Christian Education Staff as this year moves along. We have been fortunate this year to have two dedicated teachers to teach our Sunday School classes. The numbers of children involved in Sunday School has been low this year, and we are praying as our church family grows, so then our Sunday School program will grow. Our goal for finding individuals that are willing to offer their time energies to teaching our most precious resource... our children, will be our greatest challenge. We will be discussing and planning in the next several months for the remainder of the year, but also next year. Should we approach Christian Education differently? Should we continue with our One Room Sunday School Curriculum? How can we recruit more individuals that will take on the challenge, yet reward of teaching our children about Tod's great love and grace? And how can we build our numbers, embracing all the children in our congregation? All of these questions need to be answered in this next year. Wouldn't you like to help Christian Education answer these questions? Please see any of the Christian Education Staff for ways you can help out. - Laurie Pflugh Chairperson, Christian Education RPUMC YOUTH: Please see the new additions to the RPUMC Youth Alive Calendar of Events. Don't forget to make sweaters and baby hats. - Allene Gallagher Chairperson, Missions LETTER FROM ARCH STREET UMC: On behalf of the entire team of the Mayor's Task Force on Homeless Services, we would like to express our gratitude for your support of The Engagement Center. In recent years, public officials, human service providers, businesses, and members of the community have joined together to solve the problem of homelessness. While we are heartened by our success to date, we are mindful that our work is not done until everyone has a home. The Engagement Center, which will provide hot drinks, snacks, showers, laundry, therapeutic engagement counseling, and case management services to chronically homeless individuals who are not yet willing to participate in treatment or residential services, fills a critical gap in Philadelphia's continuum of care for the homeless. Ridley Park United Methodist Church's $500 tax-deductible donation helped make it possible for The Engagement Center to become a reality. Your generosity was an expression of confidence in our efforts to make a difference in the lives of homeless individuals and, for this, we are grateful. Thank you again for your contribution. signed Sincerely, Jeffrey W. J. Wilush, Sister Mary Scullion, Reverend Susan Cole, Elizabeth G. Hersh The donation was given by the Mission Committee. |
